Apologies if this is a dumb question, are rooms and groups just for categorisation / sorting or is it possible to control all devices in a room / group with a single command?

habe a look at devspec in the commandref.
eg: set room=xy on
device selection by regex combined with selection by attribute and FILTER is very powerful.
