Hello,

I am planning to install a FS20 system in my new house, and was
looking at dimmers for CFLs when I discovered the Govena product
range.
They sell inexpensive (~20€ street price) 20W CFL light bulbs
including the radio-controlled dimmer (built-in!), along with a range
of dimmable CFL bulbs.
The protocol of communication is undisclosed on their website, and
uses 433MHz.
I guess it would be easy to "listen" to the remote controller they
sell to reproduce its messages with a CUL/CUN adapter and the FHEM
system.
What do you think of this idea?

Any other idea to have dimmable light sources "on the cheap" ?

Best regards from Paris, France

Jerome

You should not underestimate the time needed to reverse engineer a protocol.
You will learn a lot, which in itself may be worth of it, but I'd rather invest
my time and money into implementing some widely used protocol which is supposed
to be available longer. I dont think that the govena protocol belongs to this
category (without really knowing the company or who is backing it).

AFAIK there are FS20/HomeMatic dimmers available, but I dont know if they can
dim CFL bulbs.

Thanks a lot for your great comments.

However, their solution seems very smart.
To dimm CFLs you need usually 2 parts : a dimmer and a dimmable
ballast (to provide the high voltage for the tube).
They have integrated both within the compact design!! that is so
smart ! Then there is only one thing that requires wiring : the
control of the dimmer. and they were so smart that they included a
wireless system within the bulb! All that for 20€ each bulb, where the
FS20 dimmer receptor is alone >30€, then you have to add a dimmable
bulb or ballast...

What I will probably do is use at first standard FS20 switches and
then when their protocol will be known, add their bulbs for dimming...

Any other idea?

Best regards,
Jerome

Hi,

the govena aslo system uses 433,92 MHz - FS20 868 MHz. So, there is no
way to control govena aslo bulbs with FS20 equipment. Maybe you can use
fhem with a second CUL with 433 MHz. In any case there is much
programming work to do... Worth it?

Best regards,

Martin

Indeed, I was thinking of a gateway through the PC with two CUL
antennas.
it is frequent to see configuration with at least 2 kind of
protocols : FS20 + HomeMatic + One-Wire for example...

I will work on that in the future.

Anybody else interested ?

For your info, Govena is sold through Amazon : see http://www.amazon.de/dp/B001UQ6CUU
